October is one of the best times to add trees and shrubs to an East Tennessee yard. The air is cooler, but the soil is still warm enough for roots to grow.
It is also time to plant daffodils, tulips, and other spring-flowering bulbs. They need the cold months underground before blooming next spring.
Choose plants that fit the sunlight, soil, and mature size of the space. Water them well after planting, even when the weather feels cool.
